Whilst the detail of many elements of the future farm subsidy schemes remain unclear, some changes to the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) will come into effect from 2025.

Although the current schemes are not yet changing, requirements to undertake further work to be eligible for subsidy are being introduced from 2025. In order to be eligible to claim BPS next year, the first part of a Whole Farm Plan will be required.  A claimant will be expected to confirm their business has completed at least two of the below activities prior to 15th May 2025:

Grants for Carbon Audits and Soil Analysis are still available to help support claimants preparing for their 2025 application.

Additional changes will be introduced to Cross Compliance requirements in 2025 for Peatland and Wetland areas prohibiting a range of activities on land with peat soils more than 50cm in depth and wetland habitats.

Changes are also to come into effect for those claiming the Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme (SSBSS) with a requirement for the dam to have a calving interval threshold of 410 days or less to be eligible.

These new conditions are to help support the transition toward a proposed more sustainable model of food production and farm businesses should start the process of preparing for these now, well in advance of making their 2025 BPS claim.
