Berkhamsted School Sixth Form

Client
Berkhamsted School
Size
30,000 sq ft
Value
£12m

This new sixth form building represents the completion of the first phase of Berkhamsted School’s comprehensive masterplan project and involves the demolition of three existing buildings to make way for a new state-of-the-art facility that includes flexible teaching spaces, a café, offices and communal social spaces for students.

Founded in 1541, Berkhamsted School is located within a conservation area and we worked tirelessly to collaborate with local stakeholders to ensure the complex planning requirements were successfully met. The site is located on a medieval burial ground and the scheme required considerate and appropriate design in order to preserve these historic interests. This meant relocating objects of historical importance in order to successfully complete the works.

The client has an overarching desire to be as sustainable as possible, which was encompassed into the design. We installed air source heat pumps for the heating and cooling system, a blue and green roof to capture and disperse rainwater as well as a biodiverse meadow and landscaping scheme that surrounds the new building.
