The Cumberhead Forest project showcases how renewable energy and commercial forestry can thrive together.
Working closely with the landowner, our renewables and forestry teams have helped transform the estate from a solely timber-growing property into a major renewable energy hub, balancing energy generation with responsible land management.
What began with the 15 megawatt (MW) Nutberry Wind Farm has expanded significantly, with the 50 MW Cumberhead Wind Farm becoming operational in 2022. Two further projects, Douglas West Extension Limited and Cumberhead West Wind Farm Limited, are now under construction. This brings the total wind energy capacity on the estate to over 200MW. Not only has this phased approach provided the landowner with rental income alongside their timber operations, but has supported their wider ESG commitments.
By carefully aligning turbine locations, infrastructure, and felling operations, our experts have minimised disruption to forestry while enabling the construction of next-generation turbines, now reaching 200 metres in height. This collaboration has ensured the estate remains commercially viable while playing a key role in delivering clean, green energy for the UK.
