Hartsbourne Country Club

Location
Hertfordshire, UK
Dates
2018-2021

The extensive restoration of Hartsbourne Country Club, with the addition of several contemporary buildings to suit the needs of the club’s members and the local community.

To ensure its preservation for future generations and to grow its membership, the club needed to modernise several of its facilities, such as the spa, function room and swimming pool, and deliver sustainable spaces to use for income generation. The scheme also included plans to enhance the existing buildings for more economical and efficient daily use.

The existing clubhouse is within a locally listed building and required the expertise of our heritage team to safeguard many historic elements of the 19th century home. The redevelopment plan would transform the house into 10 private residential apartments.

As the site is situated within a Green Belt, it presented several challenges to the scheme. The new clubhouse will be partly underground to minimise disruption and any changes to the landscape. To achieve planning permission for the project, we demonstrated that the scheme was sympathetic to the surroundings and justified the new buildings in a Green Belt setting.

We achieved a resolution to grant permission from the local planning authority, where the members have unanimously resolved to grant permission. This was a result of extensive engagement with the local community and authorities.
