Our client wanted to regenerate older 7,000 sqm sections of Straiton Retail Park to attract new tenants to this high footfall, modern shopping experience on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The scale and complexity of the project raised several planning issues, which we overcame.
Longstanding vacant and derelict sites within the retail park were identified for modernisation and their redevelopment would allow for the completion of the site. Through detailed consultation with the architect, engineer and local authority planning department, we secured the required consents within six months to allow the regeneration and new-build works to commence on time.
The nature of retail meant that some original tenants had vacated, new ones were taking occupancy, and some required additional floorspace, so modifications to buildings at several locations within the park were required. Our existing knowledge of the area, together with a strong working relationship with the planning authority, meant we hit the ground running, working to tight timescales.
Through careful negotiation and well-presented planning applications, we smoothed the planning process to allow Peel Land and Property to deliver bespoke retail space for new and existing tenants, within strict timeframes and avoiding costly appeals processes or lease penalties.
Straiton is continuously evolving and as such we have been involved with everything from modifying facades to major redevelopments and will continue with future requirements for new extensions and drive-through facilities.
