The Grade II Listed Portico, once part of the London Orphan Asylum and later home to the Salvation Army, had fallen into disrepair and was included on the heritage at risk register.
Extensive restoration, combined with a contemporary extension, turned this historic structure into a state-of-the-art health centre. It now serves over 15,000 patients with 18 consulting rooms, six treatment rooms, and a minor procedure room, alongside new reception areas and administrative spaces.
The original site of the GP practice was too small and outdated to meet Hackney’s growing healthcare needs and the project provided much-needed space for Clapton’s GP practice to expand, improving healthcare for the community. The collaboration also brought back a sustainable use to this historic building, giving it a new lease of life.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the Portico, we collaborated closely with the client team, local planning authority, conservation officers, and Historic England. One key goal was to agree accessibility solutions that suited a modern healthcare facility while fully utilising the historic colonnades as the new accessible entrance. This approach allowed the main entrance to remain in its original location, ensuring equal access for everyone and preserving the historic significance of the building.
The restored Portico strengthens Hackney’s healthcare infrastructure and helps GPs collaborate with other practices in the Primary Care Network. Together, they share resources, and expertise, and improve patient care.
Embracing sustainability, the building features a green roof, bat and bird boxes, and wildlife-friendly landscaping to enhance biodiversity. This approach not only rejuvenates the site but creates a thriving environment for local wildlife.
With its restoration complete, the Portico is now removed from the Buildings at Risk Register, ensuring it will serve the community for generations to come.
