Tunwell’s Court, 33-34, Trumpington Street, Cambridge

The project involved the conversion and refurbishment of two 300-year-old buildings located on Trumpington Street and we were instructed us to carry out a change of use from offices to five self-contained postgraduate apartments for students of Peterhouse. The two retail units on the ground floor were retained and refurbished for re-letting.  

The work included substantial fabric repairs, replacement of servicing systems, complete re-roofing and thermal upgrades. The Grade II listed building presented many challenges and the client instructed us to retain as many of the existing features as possible, keeping alterations to a minimum. 

The significant works included structural repairs that required new oak timbers and steelwork to strengthen existing timber framework, and the repair of the historic windows, some of which had 150-year-old graffiti etched into the glass. 

The award-winning project was completed on time and now offers contemporary accommodation for postgraduate students and fellows of the college. The apartments retain their historic charm while providing modern facilities for residents.
