LOCATION
Pennyghael is a small village with a population of just over 100 residents located on the Ross of Mull Peninsula and offers a sub post office and a community hall. The Inn at Port nan Gael with its “Clansman Bar” serves a superb assortment of dishes that highlight local produce, including locally sourced meat and fish.
The village of Bunessan, approximately 10 miles west, offers further facilities including an additional convenience store with Post Office, the community initiative “Castaways” charity shop, medical centre, mechanics, community hall, police station in addition to the Bunessan Inn, which has been at the heart of the community for three centuries, as well as the Ross of Mull Historical centre which provides an important archive about the people, the history and the natural environment of the Ross of Mull. The nearest petrol station can be found at Ardfenaig three miles west of the village. Primary schooling is available at Bunessan Primary School which allows parents to register their children for either English Medium or Gaelic Medium education, with higher education available on the Island’s only high school at Tobermory (41 miles north) where pupils can also study Gaelic. In addition, the school provides for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards. Craignure, approximately 20.5 miles northeast, is the main ferry port on Mull and provides regular daily services to Oban on the mainland. The Mull and Iona Community Hospital is also located at Craignure. A further ferry service is available at Fishnish (about 26 miles) which runs to Lochaline on the mainland.
More generally The Isle of Mull is part of the Inner Hebrides on Scotland’s west coast. The proximity to the mainland makes Mull one of the most accessible islands on the west coast as well as an extremely popular tourist destination due to the diversity of the landscape from snow capped mountains to rugged coastlines and white sand beaches. Mull is renowned for its variety of wildlife, which includes otter, seal, minke whales and a range of dolphin species. White tailed sea eagle and golden eagle are also seen, with Mull often referred to as ‘Eagle Island’ due having one of the highest density populations in Britain. To the west of Pennyghael lies the small island of Iona. Measuring approximately 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long the island is home to around 170 residents. Iona is well known for its historical significance and is reported to attract about 130,000 visitors annually.
Approximately 41 miles away, Tobermory, with its recognisable colourful buildings, was built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and is now the largest town on Mull. Tobermory has a wide range of services including a weekly open air producers market selling the best of locally grown and made produce from the Isle, delicatessen, grocer, range of independent stores, including a hardware store, jeweller, gift shops, outdoor based stores, library, larger post office, pharmacy, high street bank, mechanics and further petrol station in addition to a range of restaurants and cafes.
For the golfer, there are a variety of courses available to work on your handicap. Tobermory Golf Course on the north of the island is a challenging nine-hole course set on the cliffs overlooking Tobermory Bay with panoramic views of Ardnamurchan, Loch Sunart and the Isle of Skye. Craignure Golf Club to the east is a nine-hole links course situated on the shore of Scallastle Bay with some challenging “risk and reward” holes, the club house is not manned, and they operate on an honesty box principle. While The Isle of Iona, just a short ferry ride away, offers an 18-hole course with superb beach and island views and has been ranked as one of the best short courses in the world.
The waters around Mull and Oban are ideal for keen sailors. The ‘Round Mull Yacht Race’ is an annual three-day race that starts and finishes in Oban. The race starts down the Sound of Mull before going round the north end of Mull and returning along the islands west coast. The spectacular Calgary Bay, with its picture-perfect white sands and teal blue waters, is located on the west coast of Mull and is understandably a popular tourist spot. For cyclists there a range of stunning coastal routes to enjoy, in June each year there is the ‘Isle of Mull Sportive’, known as the UK’s most scenic sportive. There are two routes both starting from Tobermory, the shorter route is a 43-mile circular route round the north of island and the longer route, 87 miles, is a circular taking in most of Mull’s coastline. Keen walkers and hikers will not be disappointed with a variety of routes from short, flat coastal paths to full day mountain hikes and everything in between. Ben More (not to be confused with Ben More near Crainlarich) is the only island Munro outside of Skye, while not one of the highest Munros with an elevation of just 966 meters, it can be seen as one of the more gruelling as you start your ascent from sea level. On the mainland, Oban is a popular seaside town on Scotland’s West Coast with a wider range of amenities including larger supermarkets, leisure centre, high street shops, school with hostel, further banks, cinema, restaurants and bars.
From Oban there are buses to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Fort William with Oban Train Station providing services to Glasgow and Tyndrum, the latter allows for a connection to the Caledonian Sleeper which offers a daily overnight service to Central London.
Glasgow Airport is approximately 120 miles distant (via ferry) and offers a range of daily domestic and international flights.
DESCRIPTION
Pennyghael House is believed to date from around 1819 incorporating an earlier house with later additions in around 1920 and was previously owned by the rock band Genesis.
Once the focal point of Pennyghael Estate, the house now lies in a derelict state but offers a wonderful opportunity for the next custodians to either restore the current house or develop a new property elsewhere on the site, subject to the necessary permissions being obtained. Planning permission was granted in 2007 for the demolition of parts of the existing building and restoration of the remainder.
